Rock/Paper/Scissors/Spock/Lizard

So in an Ultimate Frisbee game, you have to decide who gets possesion of the disc, and which end of the field each team will start on. Traditionally this is done by flipping a disc, just like a coin toss. But when I played out in Olympia, WA, we would play bear/ninja/cowboy to see who got the disc.

Bear/ninja/cowboy is just like rock/paper/scissors, with different weapons. You see, the bear eats the ninja, the ninja catches the cowboy’s bullets (then proceeds to kick his ass, I presume), and the cowboy, of course, shoots the bear.

Now, it turns out, there is another interesting variation on the game:

Hey, I do programming! And I like to paint! Okay, so I am not quite so into the programming part as Paul Graham, but he writes a nice essay about how the two can coexist in one person: Hackers and Painters. via Kottke
